The collection was featured by Design Milk, which described the Cedric Mitchell x JOOPITER collaboration as “True Memphis with Modern Funk.” The feature places the collection within a wider conversation about Memphis Milano, postmodern design, color, culture, and contemporary collectibility.

Published in April 2026, Design Milk’s feature presents the collection across 25 images and traces how Cedric Mitchell’s Modern Funk language moves through furniture, sculptural glass, mirrors, vessels, drinkware, and fashion.

Built in Motion

This wasn’t something I sat down and mapped out all at once.

It came out of movement. Late nights in the studio. Music playing. Letting the forms move how they wanted and allowing the material to speak back.

After building the lighting work for the listening room, I started thinking beyond individual pieces. I became interested in how objects live together, how they shape a space, and how energy can travel across different forms.

Lighting was the entry point. The larger goal was to build a world.

One Language Across Glass, Furniture and Lighting

From there, everything started to connect.

Furniture. Lighting. Mirrors. Objects. Sculpture. Drinkware. Fashion.

These are not separate categories. They are parts of the same system.

You can feel that continuity in the curves, repetition, color, and in the way pieces stack, balance, tilt, and lean into one another. There is a rhythm to the entire Cedric Mitchell x JOOPITER collection.

That rhythm comes from where I come from: music, movement, improvisation, and letting things happen in real time instead of over-controlling them.

Modern Funk isn’t something applied to the work afterward. It is the foundation.

Modern Funk and the Memphis Design Legacy

Modern Funk is my evolving design language—bold color, playful geometry, stacked forms, unexpected balance, and objects that feel alive in a room.

The work shares a spirit of experimentation with Memphis Milano and postmodern design, but it also carries the visual language of Black culture, hip-hop, streetwear, music, and my own path from Tulsa to Los Angeles.

I am not interested in simply repeating a design movement from the past. I want to push that freedom forward and create a language that reflects who I am, where I come from, and how I see the future of collectible design.

Holding Space in Collectible Design

This collection is also about authorship.

Lighting, furniture, and collectible design are spaces where Black designers remain underrepresented at the level of ownership, recognition, and legacy.

That matters.

The goal is not only to be present. It is to shape the environment—to define what it looks like, what it feels like, and what holds it together.

This body of work holds that line while expanding the language of Cedric Mitchell Design beyond glass and into a multidisciplinary practice.

The 25-Piece Cedric Mitchell x JOOPITER Collection

The full collection came together as an environment: 25 pieces built in the same voice, with the same energy and the same visual language.

Functional, but still expressive. Designed to live in real spaces. Designed to be used. Designed to carry presence.

Some pieces are quiet. Others turn the volume all the way up. But they all speak to one another.

The collection includes sculptural glass works such as Halo Study, Ettore’s Echo, Bendrix, Triovo, Moonstruck, and Orbolo, alongside furniture, mirrors, drinkware, and Modern Funk apparel.

Featured Work: Primary Portal I

Primary Portal I is a sculptural mirror that shifts with light, movement, and the environment around it. Bold geometric framing surrounds a mirrored center, pulling the room and the viewer into the work.

It operates as furniture, object, and architecture at the same time—part of a larger conversation between the individual piece and the space it occupies.
