In Conversation: Cedric Mitchell on JOOPITER

Built in motion

This wasn’t something I sat down and mapped out.

It came out of movement. Late nights in the studio. Music playing. Letting the forms move how they wanted. Letting the material speak back.

After building the lighting work for the listening room, I started thinking beyond single pieces. Not just about objects on their own, but how they live together. How they shape a space. How they carry energy across different forms.

Lighting was just the entry point.

One language, multiple forms

From there, everything started to connect.

Furniture. Objects. Drinkware.

Not separate categories, but part of the same system.

You can feel that continuity in the work. In the curves. In the repetition. In the way pieces stack, balance, and lean into each other.

There’s a rhythm to it.

That rhythm comes from where I come from. Music. Movement. Improvisation. Letting things happen in real time instead of over-controlling them.

Modern Funk isn’t something I apply to the work. It’s the foundation.

Holding space

This collection is also about authorship.

Lighting, furniture, and collectible design are spaces where Black designers are still underrepresented at the level of ownership and legacy.

That matters.

Not just being present, but shaping the environment. Defining what it looks like, what it feels like, and what holds it together.

This work is about holding that line while expanding the language.

This body of work came together as a full environment.

Functional, but still expressive. Designed to live in real spaces. Designed to be used. Designed to carry presence.

Some pieces are quiet. Some are louder.

But they all speak to each other.
